Beit Midrash ‘Or Samech’

  • Public Buildings

Location: Sanhedria neighborhood, Jerusalem
Built area: 1,000 square meters underground
The entire synagogue is submerged in the ground, except for the entrance gate which is made of a three-dimensional lettered structure. Light enters the hall from two patio courtyards and an overhead window. The bookcases wrap the central space from floor to ceiling, seemingly carrying the ceiling of the hall. The wall that separates the women’s courtyard (Ezrat Nashim) is made of a ‘lace curtain’ of folded metal plates.
